January 7, 2012:
Good Rock & Roll Day everyone.
I was asked to review what turned out to be a tremendous new CD. As you are aware if it happened after 1979 normally I wouldn't give it 4 seconds. This is worth owning regardless of the decades of music you follow.
Jon Macey
“Intention”
Since the end of the 1970’s I haven’t changed my declaration
and lack of excitability when it comes to musical artists from any genre unfastening
their labor. There has been only a
smattering of vinyl and CD releases that my ears and stomach can sanction.Jon Macey possesses the uncommonness to have
satisfied an old rocker’s musical palate as part of a band and in a solitary
setting.
Jon Macey is co-founder of one of the finest New
England groups Fox Pass
during the 1970’s.Their eclectic mix
combined brilliant elements of the Beatles, underground, and Power Pop (before
the term reached its embryonic stage).Fox
Pass performs to this day and their
last release in 2010 “Intemporel” illuminates well in any collection.
Jon’s “Intention” must have been to take the most formidable
path before the CD reached fruition.Instead of seeking the comfort zone of previous successes he eyeballed
another plateau on the rock and roll mountain. The fifteen tracks are outside the margins of the up-tempo 60’s and 70’s
style tunes he has conceptualized during the decades of yesteryear. From the opening note to closing credits the
sounds are defined by acoustic Jon or unplugged Macey.
An artist doesn’t gain endorsements for style points.A change in the compass’s direction normally
spells implosion in neon.Paul Simon’s Graceland
superseded greatness not because of the risk of leaving the dazzling
folk-rock/singer songwriter kingdom he commanded but for the whole effect of
the results.
John Macey (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, and production)
with a little help from his friends, Bruce Demaree (percussion and all but the
kitchen sink), Clara Kebabian (violin), Rich Lamphear (acoustic guitar), Mike
Pyle (electric guitar), Tamaki Sakakibara (vocals), and Lynn Shipley (vocals
and production) lead us to a comprehensive look at a mirror darkened, moldy,
and cracked with memories of days hard to recapture, the agony others have
caused, our own shortcomings, and reasons to persevere nevertheless.
Using influences from The Band, Bob Dylan, Joe Jackson, John
Mellencamp, Willie Nile, and Graham Parker we are brought to the harshness of
reality during the opening number “Trapped.”As Jon conveys the message many of us thirty and over relate to “I’m
outdated”, the CD takes us on an excursion that will never be mistaken for the
land of elegance.
“Pine Island”
broadcasts with impeccable clarity “It's too late for a mid-life crisis, it's too soon to just close our
eyes'.”
“Look Both Ways” is in the realm of the Rolling Stones
“Waiting On A Friend” in structure only.Jon’s message isn’t about the impending arrival but fate, reality, and
sculpturing your own story.
“Criminal At Heart” may conjure sounds of Ritchie Valens
performing “La Bamba” but Jon’s proclamation is “You’re a criminal at heart,
playing with emotions.”
“Jefferson County, Early November” is eerie and harrowing, still
with one eye open and the other exempt from the elements we go down to the bone
yard.Is it the cemetery ravaged through
the years or a slang term for finding old ships that have lost the will to
sail?
After the initial listening you are left gulping, wanting to
comprehend all facets of the journey. Is
it an episode from the “Twilight Zone” or man’s continuing appalling treatment
of all things living?
The production that encompasses “Intention” is stellar. You can feel the guitar pick hitting the E
string.
Few albums the past thirty-two years have made such an
impact warranting endless return listens.
All the best,

How are you doing in AIRPLANE LAND?
A lot of folks (thank you) have been emailing about the
recent Marty Balin gig in Boston.
Joe Vig was kind enough to use his expertise in assisting
the performance to include Marty and band.
Check out the link below for the set list and the current
band members.
When Marty is headlining there is more room for
the legendary tunes such as "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds."

Welcome to the Circus Tent.
Some very sad news to report.
With deepest sympathy to Signe Anderson (original female lead-singer) on the
passing of her husband Michael Ettlin on February 21st, 2011.
Michael had been bravely battling cancer.
They were close as a couple could be and reminded me of the love my parents
afforded each other for 53 years.
When the word class is defined Signe’s image is shown. She is a wonderful
person and I hope the positive thoughts from the Jefferson Family will get
her through the toughest of times.
May you all be well always,
CF

Welcome to winter rock and roll.
How are you?
It may happen once a century (or less) that I am
able to listen to a piece of music by an artist that
didn't have a record contract prior to 1980. I was
so impressed by a CD from April Martin I wanted to
The chances of an artist or band that secured a record contract after 1979 making its way to my ears would be as prevalent as a Lunar Eclipse coinciding with the Winter Solstice.
April Martin’s magnificent effort possesses all the ingredients to be the exception to the rule. The music is the star; she is unassuming throughout the fourteen tracks, recalling her influences while chiseling the road ahead, and all along the journey always comfortable in her own skin thanks to the success of her day jobs (the practice of psychology and public speaking).
April’s admiration for Joan Baez, Buffy St. Marie, and Peter, Paul & Mary from the 1960’s folk scene is evident and the same can be said for the hankering of the Everly Brothers, the Beatles, and Carole King.
April’s collection of songs came to the attention of Peter Calo (Carly Simon, numerous other session works, as well as a recording artist in his own right).Peter produced the CD with the culmination that properly articulates April’s vision while splendid to the senses.
The conjurations of the folk oriented tracks are evident from the initial listening.“Pennies In A Jar” doesn’t take a multitude of attention before you appreciate the contentment between the lyrical and music content. From the openings notes of “Out of My Hands” (a defectless choice to start the festivities) to the final seconds of “Warrior of the Heart”, April has guided us through a rippleless sea.
I’m irresolute to remove the disc from the CD player knowing it may be another couple of centuries before I’m enthralled again by a release of recent vintage.
All the best,
Craig Fenton

Hi Airplane & Family Fans:
Hope the holidays were all you strived for.
Signe Anderson sent me a recent photo of her with Jorma and Jack
and it perfectly fit the holiday spirit. Pretty cool that they each continue
a friendship that still rocks after all these decades.
Have a great day,

Hi Airplane Family Fans:
I hope the month has been going well and the holiday season will be family first.
It is with the saddest heart I wanted to let you know that Marty Balin's wife Karen
has passed away. Marty thanks all those that have shown such support during a tough
10-14 days. I called Marty Saturday evening and under the circumstances he was doing
okay.
You here many horror stories about rock and roll wives but I can tell you first hand what a
joy it was to talk with her over the years.Although she was married to a Hall of Famer she
always took an interest in the projects of ours. Karen would enquire about books, liner notes,
lectures, etc.
Karen as you down upon us thank you for your kindness, sense of humor,
and treating everyone with respect and equality.
For the Balin family better times ahead.
All the best,
Craig

Welcome to the Circus Tent:
Hope all is well today. Thanks for stopping by.
Jesse Barish one of the gifted songwriters of any generation has
a new CD and you can find the review below as well as where to purchase
“Restless Soul.”
Jesse Barish Continues To Be Soul Superlative
Not too long ago my girlfriend wanted to know how I got introduced to Jesse Barish.Sincere thanks are offered to the combination of Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Marty Balin (Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and KBC Band) and Mike Somavilla (number one historian of the legendary band Quicksilver Messenger Service).
Jesse’s resume of writing timeless tunes which includes but are not limited to “Count On Me”, “St. Charles”, “Atlanta Lady”, and “Hearts” is only superseded by his ego-free existence. He is the true professional, successful yet humble and appreciative of his fans and his craft.
Marty Balin remarked to me in early 2010 that Jesse’s songs are so well constructed frequently he doesn’t have to change one lyric to record or perform the composition.
Jesse’s latest release “Restless Soul” is the follow-up to his 2008 CD “Wheel Keep Turning” and he continues his partnership with Jeff Pescetto.Jeff has contributed to movie soundtracks such as “Honey, I Shrunk The Kids” and “License To Kill.”
“Restless Soul” offers eighteen tracks that possess a wonderful continuity. The music flows freely without the need to omit any of the material from the listening experience. The title piece is perfect with pure emotion and warmth; you’ll feel as if on a flawless summer night you are experiencing the sights and sounds Jesse is articulating.
One of the standout songs “Blink Of An Eye” conjures up memories of Seals & Crofts from the 1970’s.Jesse can permeate memories of decades of yesteryear while sounding relevant today.
As the CD changes from “Borrowed Time” to “Simple Faith” it is perceptible that Jesse has encompassed the best of many musical styles while putting his signature on the disc.
Thanks for all those that have been asking about Signe Anderson
and her husband Michael. It has been difficult to get him completely
stable. There have been peaks and valleys.Doctors seem to have
found a good game plan.Signe goes for some testing soon to make
sure the cancer is under control.
Some Marty Balin info coming early December for you fine folks.
May all of you be well,
CF
