1/7/07:
Welcome to a new section that came out of the thoughts and opinion of Airplane/Hot Tuna fan Ron Rosen. Ron and some others had emailed about their belief that on the famous Jorma/Janis Typewriter Tape it is Jorma's first wife Margaretta Kaukonen. Ron had heard this on the well known progressive rock station KSAN in San Francisco way way way back. Tom Donohue (Big Daddy before his free-form radio days) gave Jorma's old lady (As he put it) as the source.
In no way am I hear to ever give my thoughts as facts. I am a fan and not running for political office. I heard other information about the source, including the 2nd progressive rock station in the nation WNEW-FM. The first was short lived wOR-FM which in 1967 had all female jocks.
Please believe what you wish. Two sides to the coin and the ribbon as well. I thought it would be only right to mention the other side.
I do want to put up a letter from a fan because he is in the middle and pointing out both sides and sources being quality and way back from each point of view.
This has been fun because of the amount of attention and the old telephone game we played in 1st Grade.
Thanks for those that asked about dad during our emails. Better, but not home!
Have a great flight,
CF
Dear Airplane Man:
I wanted to give some thoughts about the Jorma/Janis typewriter discussion because I am old enough to give you exact accounts and as somebody that loved the book, I am not taking sides. I heard things both ways.
On the lighter side most musicians don’t want any distractions. If they are playing in a house I would think they would ask somebody to type in another side of the home as to not be disturbed. For the people that think it was Janis, it would make sense that she would be heard.
Anyway here we go. KSAN San Francisco did indeed mention Jorma’s old lady on the typewriter. However as somebody that would go all over the country to see shows WNEW mentioned Janis as the source a bit before. I think Craig can give you the details about the birth of progressive radio. WNEW should have been on a bit before KSAN. I also heard Janis as the source during the progressive days of WXRT Chicago and progressive days of Boston’s WBCN. I never heard WLIR to comment on them, sorry. I did here a college station in Portland in the early 70’s say they thought it was Jorma’s wife.
Thanks Airplaneman for the book and I loved getting the crazy off the wall titles.
By the way Craig the two talk show hosts had some great words of praise for the book. Cool job man!
I will go because I bet you want to upload the interview you did yesterday to the website.
Rock on in 2007
R.E.
